how long until ai generated text makes up the majority of the text available on the internet? how long until human voices are drowned out by the cacophony of years past? i understand how people felt about books going out of fashion now

Don't you hate it when you spend over 15 years of your life honing your ability to speak to computers only to have the computers start to talk to themselves? I'm going to be replaced by a bunch of logic chips when I thought I was always going to be their operator. Makes me sad.

@FortniteStatus Sometimes respawning after a period of time will fix it, but it affects us most when we're colliding with an object. In 40v40 creative modes, it's pronounced and happens regularly.

@FortniteStatus I play Fortnite with someone else on one internet connection. Popular creative/UEFN game modes lag terribly when we play together. 1gb/s fiber w/ 10ms ping to London, already rebooted router and computers. What's the fix?

We're aware of an issue preventing Fortnite Creative islands that have been converted to UEFN from being converted back to Creative. We'll let you know when we have information on a fix.

This is why JS wins in the JS vs. Python debate JS engines as well as their JIT compilers are just insane feats of engineering, often on the cutting edge of research Meanwhile Python is literally 30 years behind the research in interpreter optimizations
Ben Dicken@BenjDicken

Js people: Ok your language is actually fast Python people: Come defend your language Go people: Needs more optimizations C people: Don't worry. If you enable the optimizer, this thing goes BRRRRRRRRRRRR.

@Grady_Booch "slop" it's not accurate enough to be considered information i'm slopping through chatgpt for an answer. chatgpt gave me some slop about this. i slopped for a while and almost got a real answer, but had to search the sum of all human knowledge published online instead

Do you run a Plex server? Make sure that your /tmp file system is tmpfs! Plex expects to do gigabytes of writes in there whenever anyone streams. I checked my SSD writes the other day, and after six months my Plex host SSD has written 1500TB. 2TB of that is genuine.

@dieworkwear Mariano Rubinacci looks stellar, truly the 'statue of David' look. A huge improvement over the common 'meat stuffed into a cheap, small suit' look. I guess the logic is 'short and skimpy will show off figure' despite it doing the opposite.

The job market contracts during a recession. Another side effect is the increasing skill requirements. The few people left working in small companies don't have any bandwidth to train engineers who don't have domain experience.

I hate seeing stuff like this. 😭 Chromium code is landing with CLs that reference design docs and bugs that aren't visible outside of Google.

@kevinroose As someone who runs a Postgres cluster on their downstairs computer, I find it embarrassing that there isn't even a cursory explanation of database technology. Here you go: It's a filing cabinet, but you need to access papers inside it within milliseconds using algebra.

It’s been a while since we had a good tech caper, so allow me to tell you the story of the Microsoft database engineer who foiled what might have been one of the worst cyberattacks in history. nytimes.com/2024/04/03/tec…

@fasterthanlime My financial provider changed their login domain and I spent an extra 5 minutes verifying it was valid and legitimate, despite being a subdomain. Google knows that changes to security related UI results in a lot of user queries and confusion. I think this is forward thinking.

@charliek65 @rpst39 @luciascarlet If you're going to play an identical sound over and over, transmitting this sound to the headphones repeatedly is horrible for battery life - if they already know the sound, a tiny packet to say "play it my dude" is far cheaper in many ways than transmitting 44khz audio over BT

Has anyone noticed their desire to block other Twitter users has increased in recent months? I feel like I'm being exposed to more and more accounts with dissonant or harmful ideologies and they're provoking such a strong response that I bother to mute or block.
