Ed Hagen critica en este hilo la Hipótesis de la Abuela, una de las teorías más famosas y aceptadas en antropología evolutiva, y lo hace de forma bastante directa. La hipótesis de la abuela explica por qué las mujeres humanas tienen menopausia (algo muy raro en el reino animal). La idea es que, alrededor de los 50 años, las mujeres dejan de tener hijos para poder ayudar a criar a sus nietos. De esta forma, sus genes se transmiten mejor ayudando a la supervivencia de la familia en lugar de arriesgarse a tener más hijos tarde (con más peligro). Hasta aquí todo bien. Donde Hagen pone el dedo en la llaga es en una consecuencia secundaria que mucha gente saca de esta hipótesis. Si las mujeres dejan de ser fértiles alrededor de los 50, entonces en una tribu típica hay muchas más mujeres post-menopáusicas que mujeres jóvenes fértiles. Esto crea un desequilibrio ya que hay muchos más hombres fértiles que mujeres fértiles. Según la versión que critica Hagen, este desequilibrio habría hecho que los hombres evolucionaran para ser más competitivos entre sí, más posesivos con sus parejas y más centrados en exhibiciones de estatus y dominio para conseguir acceso sexual, en lugar de centrarse en ser buenos proveedores y padres.
