Today's my birthday, I hit 37! On my birthday I usually use that day to reflect on the past year to see how the year has gone, To set new goals and then eat some cake with the family. Truthfully, this year has been A WILD ONE. - I started as a director at This Dot Labs. - Made some great relationships this year, professionally and some new friends. - Our team at @ThisDotLabs built a social media app with another team at Skylight Social that has literally hit #1 in the app store for Entertainment! - Held a tech conference that people loved with only a budget of $11,500, and now bringing back the next one this year, CYC25!! - Had several successful free cohorts that people landed jobs out of! - Building EventConvo and hoping to have the beta out soon! (Probably in less than a month!) - Purchased my house and our family has made it a home. - Leading 2 meetup communities in Dallas that are truly incredible - Lucky to have the support system around me. I am going to do things today that the Danny at 38 is very happy about and thanks the Danny at 37!

Ever wondered how calculators make sense of math expressions? Three days ago, I dove into the shunting-yard algorithm—a brilliant method for parsing expressions. Now, I’ve put it to work in a scientific calculator I built with JavaScript! Source code on GitHub on comment section!

Ever wondered how to parse and evaluate mathematical expressions in JavaScript? The shunting-yard algorithm is a classic method to convert infix notation to postfix (RPN), making evaluation straightforward. Let's dive in! Read more in the comment section. #JavaScript #Algorithms

Thread 6. Example For '3 + 4 * 2 / (1 - 5)', the algorithm produces '3 4 2 * 1 5 - / +', which evaluates to 1.

Thread 5. Overview of the algorithm The algorithm uses a stack to reorder tokens: Numbers go directly to output. Operators are pushed to stack, but first, pop higher or equal precedence operators to output. Parentheses control the order. Finally, pop remaining operators.

Thread 4. What is infix and postfix? Infix notation is the common math notation, like '2 + 3 * 4'. Postfix (RPN) is '2 3 4 * +', which is easier for computers to evaluate without parentheses.

Thread 3. In this case, since we're dealing with JavaScript, I think we'll focus on generating RPN, as it's simpler to implement and understand for this context.

Thread 2. The algorithm can produce either a postfix notation string, also known as Reverse Polish notation (RPN), or an abstract syntax tree (AST).

Thread 1. So, the shunting-yard algorithm is a method for parsing mathematical expressions specified in infix notation. It was developed by Edsger Dijkstra in the 1960s.

THEY WERE USING AI and I called them out on it! Right now we have a cohort going on and we have around 120 devs working on projects. Just caught one of them using AI, which is fine to an extent, but asked them to walk me through their code. This isn't to demean them, I just think a lot of people can learn from this. I asked questions on the things I knew AI made and they tried to lie, passing it off as their own solution. They implemented an IntersectionObserver but couldn't explain why. I knew they didn't know. I called this person out point blank and explained, if the goal was for you to get a shiny ribbon of completion, then keep doing this. If the goal is for you to be employable as a software developer at a company, then stop implementing code that you do not understand and how it works. Why put yourself in that situation? What do we even gain with this? They took it very well and said "fair enough. you are right." They had their reasons like "10 days left in the cohort, we have a serious time crunch" and I said I would rather us have an unfinished feature that WE MADE and know the inner workings of vs having a solution that is just "magic" that we don't know the first thing about. If AI is producing code for you and you understand it or it's basically writing what you know how to implement and it's just saving time by writing it out, that's fantastic. If your goal is employment and it's producing stuff you can't even talk about, then you are sabotaging your abilities, your growth as a developer and potential opportunities.
