My latest @cityjournal: When schools deliver "mental health" services, parents lose all the protections of a regulated behavioral health profession. That's by design. Last month police charged a Virginia "SEL Coach" for sexually abusing at least 4 children - police suspect more but because the school doesn't know how many kids he pulled out of class to meet privately - they have no way of knowing. And neither do parents.

@CityJournal Human beings, being human, need boundaries in therapeutic settings. Erotic transference is common- for both patient and provider. That's why clinically licensed counselors are prohibited from forming dual relationships. Not so for schools, working with children; its expected.

Once people understand what a dual relationship is, how can forcing minors into one be justified? It is an inappropriate relationship between a school counselor and children that cannot be avoided in a school setting and should be prohibited. "Dual relationships can create conflicts of interest, impair the counselor's objectivity, and increase the risk of exploiting or harming the client. Because of these risks, professional ethical codes generally require counselors to avoid dual relationships whenever possible." - Grok

Excellent piece! When I worked as a behavior consultant in schools, I was often called in to address the aftermath of SEL programs. By the time someone like me got involved, problems that should have been caught early had escalated. Families had no idea. And there were no records.
