In light of Quentin’s somewhat controversial listing of his favorite films of the 21st Century while on @BretEastonEllis, a lot of people (like @oasadi) have been asking me what mine are. It’s an impossible list to compile, but “favorite” isn’t necessarily the same as “best,” so I threw together a list that should but doesn’t include the likes of, say, Master & Commander (clearly one of the best, just not my favorite) or The Diving Bell And The Butterfly (an achievement). These are the 25 films I’ve most loved this 21st century, and yes, I love my own film as well. Happy New Year to everyone! Roger Avary’s Favorite 25 Movies of the 21st Century: 1. Children of Men (2006, Alfonso Cuarón) 2. District 9 (2009, Neill Blomkamp) 3. Gladiator (2000, Ridley Scott) 4. Flight (2012, Robert Zemeckis) 5. Waking Life (2001, Richard Linklater) 6. The Rules of Attraction (2002, Roger Avary) 7. Adaptation (2002, Spike Jonze) 8. The Florida Project (2017, Sean Baker) 9. Room (2015, Lenny Abrahamson) 10. This Must Be the Place (2011, Paolo Sorrentino) 11. School of Rock (2003, Richard Linklater) 12. Napoleon Dynamite (2004, Jared Hess) 13. Borat (2006, Larry Charles) 14. The Muppets (2011, James Bobin) 15. Haywire (2011, Steven Soderbergh) 16. Tropic Thunder (2008, Ben Stiller) 17. Bellflower (2011, Evan Glodell) 18. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, Joel & Ethan Coen) 19. The Social Network (2010, David Fincher) 20. The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009, Wes Anderson) 21. Mother! (2017, Darren Aronofsky) 22. Koko-Di Koko-Da (2019, Johannes Nyholm) 23. There Will Be Blood (2007, Paul Thomas Anderson) 24. Let the Right One In (2008, Tomas Alfredson) 25. Konosuba (2019, Takaomi Kanasaki)

@AVARY @BretEastonEllis Amazing list, Roger. Seriously. I haven’t seen 3/25 on your list and am excited to watch them. Sparks so much joy seeing all these iconic comedies, District 9, and The Social Network on your favorites list. Refreshingly anti-snobby.

@AVARY @BretEastonEllis @oasadi This is a great list, Roger. Never be ashamed to list your own film. You have to love your film or it comes out in the film and no one will love it. Happy New Year!

@AVARY @BretEastonEllis @oasadi Thank you for including The Ballad of Lester Scruggs. Rarely do anthology films work, this knocked it out of the park, and created one of the best films in decades.

@AVARY @BretEastonEllis @oasadi There's a good dozen there I haven't seen, so out of respect I will start with Flight, the highest on your list that I haven't seen (partial pun intended). I know Zemeckis is an excellent filmmaker (I even like The Polar Express), but I had no idea that Flight is that good.
