can anyone explain why a billionaire who takes advantage of the system to exploit other people is called an "oligarch" in Russia and a "job creator" in America?

@DanPriceSeattle A dictator hands out country wealth to oligarchs and controls them. Hes ultimate in power In US a plutocracy creates the ultra wealthy individually Then they hand some of it out to control their group for their benefits. Some call those mimi oligarch beneficiaries politicians

@DanPriceSeattle Because in America they start a company that grows and creates jobs and in Russia they were friends with the president in 1992.

@DanPriceSeattle Because here in the US we (mostly) are under the impression that without American oligarchs we wouldn't have jobs and someday, if we save all our pennies and cut back on Starbucks we can be billionaires too.

@DanPriceSeattle Can anyone explain why America pretends that every citizen gets a vote but "job creators" are allowed to rig the system with PACs/campaign contributions? Let's start funding our own elections. NO outside money. Every candidate gets the same amount and the same access to media.

@DanPriceSeattle It is more honest about super-rich Russians to call them oligarchs. Due to Reagan's Trickle-down theory of economics, we were lied to & told that we should want the government to give tax breaks & subsidies to the rich, so that the rich can & will create more jobs. Never worked

@DanPriceSeattle It's American exceptionalism. We do UK exceptionalism here, foreigners are immigrants, but Brits who move abroad are expatriates!

@DanPriceSeattle Those called "oligarchs" made their fortunes from being friends with the President. In America, the billionaires created their own companies and run them to be successful, not because they were friends with whoever was president

@DanPriceSeattle Marketing. Over there they just accept suffering as a part of life and carry on. Over here everybody expects to have that upward mobility all but guaranteed and nobody wants to lay any blame on the rich dudes because everybody thinks they'll be rich too eventually

@DanPriceSeattle Pretty simple: in Russia politics makes billionaires. In US billionaires are self made. Just FYI, also millionaires are called oligarchs in Russia. If you’re a millionaire, should we call you an oligarch too?

@DanPriceSeattle Yes. The USA is a free market economy, the new USSR is not. The term "oligarch" derives from the Ancient Greek oligarkhia meaning "the rule of the few". US govt contracts are generally distributed transparently…

@DanPriceSeattle In Russia, the oligarchs were basically handed all the industries by apparatchiks during and right after the collapse, so the notion that they were "self-made" is non-existent in that country. Here, billionaires cheat our government all the time and get praised for it.

@DanPriceSeattle Russian intelligence makes no distinction, summarizing succinctly that our country is run by oligarchs and that they are able to control most elections.

@DanPriceSeattle What’s the difference between a billionaire and a multi millionaire? They point fingers via tweets like this. Look at them over there (but don’t look at me).

@DanPriceSeattle Thank you! I’ve been saying the same thing. People seem to understand an extremely wealth person who has a lot of political influence in other countries is an oligarch but when it comes to USA and EU they are stockholders/businessmen. The cognitive dissonance 🤦‍♂️
