the only time i care about this is when i see clips of the pokemon anime where the subs have left the names of the POKEMON untranslated like you are not being serious here you’re just not

one example of performative behavior i've noticed for years is where when a piece of japanese media has a very widely used localized name in english some fans of it will insist on using the japanese name anyway for some reason. very "place, japan" vibes

@springbris I mean if you can hear the characters saying "Gekkouga" over and over and know exactly who they're referring to, it doesn't make much sense for the subtitles to have some nonsense localization that's blatantly not the word they're saying.

@JacquesPaught @springbris I disagree, that's like saying they should leave sword or battle untranslated cause they say it so often and you pick up what they mean when they say 戦い. I get lost sometimes cause the moves are often left unlocalized.

@ErrorofZ @springbris Except in this universe the species name is also what you call them personally. That's not just "my gekkouga", his name is literally Gekkouga.

@JacquesPaught @springbris Yeah but it has an equivalent in English, like how Japan is called Japan in English but not in Japanese. I just don't like that the default for the fan sub is Japanese names and move names. When I just want to watch it to watch it earlier and for the ost.

@ErrorofZ @springbris The anime should not suffer because the games made mistakes. No, I will not accept "Thunderbolt" as an acceptable translation when the character is literally saying the Japanese word for the number 100,000.

@JacquesPaught @springbris Games mistake? I will never understand the "Well I understand what they're saying so the subs have to match cause the words in English" There are a lot of Japanese words that are borrowed from English that are English words but mean something else. Like "tension"

@ErrorofZ @springbris Yes, the translators for the games gave a ton of moves badly localized names, and I don't think fanmade anime subtitles need to suffer because of it. Like, no, that's not Submission. That's literally a Hell Wheel technique.

@JacquesPaught @springbris It's not bad localization, it's just not aiming to be one for one. I just want to be able to follow the subs from my experience playing the games. And not have to look up what Hell Wheel is in English.
