I don't know where this socialization shit comes from. Homeschooled kids are markedly better socialized- more polite, less depressed, less violent etc. Expecting other kids to provide socialization is like teaching kids to swim by throwing them overboard.

I obviously don’t think it should be banned but it’s never something I’d do for myself or any future kids I have. Learning how to socialize, interact with people, and how to make and keep friends, and function among a community are unironically super important underemphasized skills that have to be learned from an early age.

@Recursion_Agent Personally I like hybrid homeschool models (3 days home, 2 days group classes) because it mutes much of this, but the socialization argument does seem overblown.

@Recursion_Agent Think it comes from constant interaction with parents that kids are constantly trying to hack around their parents which can lead to some odd behaviors that don’t work when interacting with others much.

@Recursion_Agent I know one (very liberal) homeschooled woman who clearly never learned to compromise with other people and seems unable to form relationships, remaining emotionally dependent on her (very liberal) parents. I blame the parents for spoiling her rotten.

@Recursion_Agent Children become socialised by hanging around people who are already socialised, namely adults. Throwing them together with a load of equally unsocialised people and expecting them to just figure it out might work eventually, but it's less efficient and effective.

@Recursion_Agent historically speaking socialization doesn't mean these things it means psychologically prepared to do assembly-line work with its shifts, obedience to bells, strict supervisory structure the results of being stuck in a group of equally feral children are just a bonus

@Recursion_Agent "Sit down." "Be quiet." "Stand in line." "Raise your hand if you want to talk." "Ask permission to go to the bathroom." "No, you can't go to the bathroom now." "Don't read that." "Read this." "Don't read ahead." "Don't do that, you're weird."

@Recursion_Agent It's exactly the public school method of "socialization" that wea are trying to avoid. I will add that I don't want my kids socializing with the vast majority of random kids that attend these schools.

@Recursion_Agent This is an argument about the definition of "socialized". To you it means able to interact with humans appropriately. To them it means raising hell like the average kids their age
