For high school, I attended a small, private, college preparatory high school. We had to choose 3 years of either Spanish, French, or Russian. As far as I know, Russian is an extremely rare offering for high school; though, it was only offered because the History teacher could already speak Russian when he was hired. We could also optionally take 2 years of one language and 2 years of a different one, or even optionally take 4 years of one language instead of 3 years. Most people took Spanish because the Spanish teacher was nicer and more lenient than the French and Russian teachers, haha. I would have totally chosen Japanese if it were offered though!

I chose Spanish because, for the careers I had in mind, it wouldn't have made a difference which language I chose to study, to be honest. I would have chosen Japanese, even if the teacher or courses were rumored to be more challenging, because Spanish just feels more mundane or not as interesting- I think it would have kept my attention more.
