What string of decisions did it take Lawerence Stroll to ditch the Mercedes engine for the Honda engine?

It appears to me the closest Aston Martin came to completing an uninterrupted race sim during these six days in Bahrain was 26 laps over two tyre stints yesterday by Fernando Alonso and then the car broke down. No proof Aston can finish a race right now. Nightmare stuff.
