A lot of it comes down to location. One of the main reasons Newey never moved to Ferrari was because he didn’t fancy doing it from Italy. I’ve been in that position before and I do understand it - there’s no point going to Italy to chase something you can have at home. If you already have a life in the UK, there’s no point moving relocating especially if you have a family, kids, a home etc. Which is why Ferrari tend to hire from Italy, and why Brits tend to stay here.

I know you can't sign every big name, but the last time we did sign a big name who came available on the market was in July 2023. That's nearly three years ago. At some point we have got to try and find a way to adapt to be able to bring *some* of this top talent onboard.

Another point - it’s not like these drivers cannot function without their engineers. Life goes on.

This Lambiase news for Red Bull is a bombshell in terms of timing, but it’s also being blown massively out of proportion. Here’s what I think the implications are for Verstappen, and in general: 1. It’s for 2028. GP would remain at Red Bull, in his current role, until the end of 2027. So it’s not like they don’t have any time at all to figure things out and restructure things before his departure. 2. As for Max, does this really imply a sudden retirement at the end of 2026? It could do. It could not. Time will tell. Conversely, as it’s for 2028, on their current trajectory, it’s highly plausible Max wouldn’t be at Red Bull in 2028 even if GP stayed. The two scenarios are not necessarily mutually exclusive. 3. In the life of an engineer, it’s natural career progression. You can’t expect such a senior figure to stay in the same role for much longer, somethings gotta give eventually. 4. Even if Max does leave F1, it’s not like it’ll permanent. He clearly still loves racing, so he’ll only be away from F1 for as long as it doesn’t appeal to him. In 2030 he’ll “only” be 33. Unless F1 fumble the next regulation set that badly, he’ll be back. He will go through what Alonso went through - the F1 bug is irresistible if you’re on the top of your game and the opportunity is the right one.

All this using a gear-stick to shift too, with slicks in the wet. Sadly there was no clutch pedal used to change gears by that time, but what I’d give to see the current grid race full manual gearbox cars…

@sebastianbaughh @LAT3BRAKING Yeah full manual shifting is an entirely different ballgame. Heel-toe with 3 pedals is essentially a different sport entirely to the 2 pedal driving we’ve adopted in F1 since the 90’s.

@vertusity Not sure how drag cars work - but it was a mix of a normal H-pattern and modern day shifting. It was like today, but instead of paddles they used a H box (with no clutch).

@FormulaUR_ Wait, sequential gears like drag cars or like the normal h pattern ?

@LAT3BRAKING In F1 they were full paddle shifts since the early 90’s though - but that didn’t catch onto junior categories until the 2000’s at least.

@LAT3BRAKING The cars were semi-manual. They still used a gear lever to shift, but no clutch pedal.
