One more layer on the 9/11 point that rarely gets said in polite company:
The attack was used to pass the Authorization for Use of Military Force, a legal document so broad it has been used to justify military operations in at least 22 countries, by five consecutive administrations, for over twenty-five years.
It was used to pass the Patriot Act, which dismantled significant portions of the constitutional privacy protections Americans claim as foundational to their identity.
It was used to create the Department of Homeland Security, to build the TSA, to normalize mass surveillance of American citizens, to establish the legal architecture for indefinite detention without trial.
All of this from an attack that, according to the official account, was carried out by a non-state actor, primarily Saudi nationals, that killed 3,000 people.
The attack did not only kill 3,000 Americans.
It was used, deliberately, by people who understood what crises make possible, to permanently restructure American law, American institutions, and American society in ways that have never been rolled back.
Cui bono is always the right question.

Israeli officials have rejected similar Doctors Without Borders claims in the past, stating Gaza receives water "above humanitarian minimums" and that restrictions are for security reasons. That is the actual ruling.
In a 6 to 3 decision, the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana's congressional map. The map created two majority-Black districts in a state where Black Americans make up roughly one third of the population. The Court ruled that the second majority-Black district was an "unconstitutional racial gerrymander."
Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion.
