Socialists spend so much time warning people about rich people buying influence, controlling others, exploiting workers, rigging the system, and living at everyone else's expense that they never stop to notice they're describing politicians. Who writes the regulations that favor special interests? Who decides where tax dollars go? Who has the power to redistribute wealth, grant privileges, hand out subsidies, and punish dissenters? Not entrepreneurs trading voluntarily in the marketplace, but political actors wielding coercive power. The irony is that many of the abuses they blame on wealth alone are only possible because government possesses powers no private citizen ever could. Yet every failure somehow becomes an argument for granting that same institution even more authority. The villain in the story was projection. The warning was aimed in the wrong direction.

Long before I was a communist the allure and grandeur of Che Guevara spoke to me as a heroic phantom of the past. Immortal and stoic. Any honest person today must admit that the most powerful figures of the last 2 centuries have been those who called themselves communists.

The only reason North Korea hasn't starved itself into extinction is that wealth created elsewhere keeps bailing it out. Communists have a habit of pointing to systems sustained by capitalist production and calling them proof that communism works. If your success story requires someone else's productivity to survive, it isn't a success story. It's a dependency.

Saying communists have the economic literacy of a dog or a toddler is unfair to dogs and toddlers. Dogs and toddlers don't understand economics, but they can learn from experience. Touch the hot stove enough times and eventually the lesson sticks. Communists watch the same policies produce shortages, stagnation, dependency, and failure over and over, then immediately demand a larger dose of the same thing. Their problem isn't ignorance. It's the refusal to learn from reality. They see the same ideas fail for the hundredth time and conclude the problem was that they weren't tried hard enough the first ninety-nine.
