@MatthewJLB despised. And that juxtaposes with Blessed Archbishop Sheen, who cared so much about his Byzantine faithful that he endeavored to provide them with the fullness of their liturgical expression.

@MatthewJLB It betrays a terrible lack of understanding. Likely converts (like me) who don't understand that for the majority of the Byzantine Catholic churches life in the US we were under the care of Latin Bishops. They know to despise BP Ireland, but don't fully understand why he is to be

Is it worth being part of a forum, where Eastern Rite Catholics (an admin!) too often post this sort of biting remark? “I don’t understand the preoccupation with Sheen and his cosplaying as a Byzantine bishop.” There is definitely a Byzantine Catholic equivalent of orthobros.

@theblessedsalt They don't have a point. By this logic, we shouldn't have misdemeanors, most of which can be sufficed by a fine. Even a rich person who gets enough traffic tickets can lose their license. Even a rich person who gets enough parking tickets can get their car impounded.

Look, I’m not saying you’re a bad parent to give your kid an iPad when you’re out to eat. But if you just push through and don’t give in, avoid nice restaurants for a while and practice at places like Starbucks, Panera, and Cracker Barrel - eventually when they’re 2 1/2, you’ll be able to take him to a coffee shop and fellow patrons won’t be disturbed by his presence when they’re trying to study. You actually will get compliments. He’ll sit in his chair well behaved and eat his snack, having a conversation with you. Then look out the window and watch cars go by for entertainment when you have to nurse the baby. Obviously every kid is different - but just never give them the iPad and see what happens. Once you give it to them, it’s hard to take it back. Kids won’t learn how to behave in public if you don’t just take them in public and practice.

Oh and BLM protesters too, for some reason. All I'm saying is, LPR's would have this whole Nacy Guthrie thing solved in a weekend. Any city that doesn't have them just wants criminals to get away with crimes. And the dog dog thing that ring does? That's actually good you nits.

@GoldenAspen1492 Or us and the kids. Books are just for me, but there is no "just for fun" reading anymore. Besides LotR, I pretty much only read non-fiction, and even that is not as much as I once did. BTW my "solo free time" is basically two hours a week.

@GoldenAspen1492 I grew up a proper millennial. All forms of entertainment were fair game. TV, movies, books, video games, all of it. But as my free time has disappeared, I find that the thing I do when I have time to myself is basically just video games. Movies and TV are for me and the wife.

Suddenly realizing that growing up with 0 video games in the house and TCM on 5 nights a week means I'm probably spiritually Gen X. I have no idea how I feel about this.
Donald Ward@WardoftheStates

One of the things you must realize with this whole "RW Movie" discourse is that Gen X is pretty much the last generation to ever watch movies. And I mean watch movies and TV shows as their main source of electronic entertainment. Think of it. Millennials grew up as gamers. You guys spent all your time playing Halo, Call of Duty, and whatnot on the computer or console. Millennials probably have only ever watched like a dozen movies in their whole life other than Shrek, Cars, Toy Story and the Star Wars Prequels. Not so much Gen X. Of course we had NES and Atari but that was usually hooked up to the only TV in the house. Maybe you got to play it one or two hours a day and that was it. Why? Because your folks and grandparents also wanted to watch Monday Night Football, Simon & Simon, The Lawrence Welk Show, professional wrestling, and the 8 o'clock movie on the only color television set in the household. By the time I got to high school I had watched thousands of different motion pictures from the 1930s to the (then) present. My experience is not unusual. Gen X is notorious for simply dropping references to old movies and TV shows. It's what we do. Yes we are that annoying. Meanwhile I'll talk to Millennials who will make astonishing statements like "I just watched Shane (1953) for the first time last night and it was great". And they're 39 years old and I'm like "Yeah, I watched Shane when I was 8 and I didn't need to Google that it was made in 1953" but I'm usually polite enough to only say this sort of thing in my head and not out loud like a dick and instead I nod solemnly when my Millennial friend gushes over Alan Ladd's performance, and the pacing, and Jack Palance's performance as the villain and yada yada. Millennials are sort of like a lost tribe in the Amazon who have discovered a cigarette lighter dropped by a tourist when they finally watch a film that was made before 1997. It's wonderful to watch but you have to be patient so they don't burn down the whole rainforest with their enthusiasm. As for Zoomers, they don't watch movies or play video games and only experience life through memes and TikTok videos telling them what to think. Thank you for reading my very serious and culturally important shitpoasts. (Give me moneys so I can do more of these Shitpoasts because I should be paid lots of moneys by RW billionaires for talking about old movies.)

@GoldenAspen1492 Yes a paid youth minister is an extravagance most of the time, but there are a lot of other parish/diocesan jobs that aren't slouch work that pay poorly and don't offer such benefits. If they can't afford a just wage and some basic benefits, they shouldn't have the position.

@GoldenAspen1492 It wasn't necessary before because work was predominately in the home and even when it was people still lived in tight communities with family around to help in the early weeks. That's just not so anymore, especially with the dual income trap a lot of people fall into
