Austin is my son’s best friend. Austin is engaged to Reagan. Regean is my daughter, Silje’s roommate. Austin, Reagan, and Silje all work at the same church in CA. I was also Austin’s homeschool tutor from 7th grade to high school graduation. Austin called me last night at 10:30pm. He never calls me. Me: Hey Austin, everything ok? Austin: Hey Gretchen, I am just calling because I got stitches in my face today, and I was wondering, in honoring of my suffering, would you name your new dog Babushka? Me: did Silje put you up to this? Austin: no Regean did. We all want that name. Me: what’d ya do to your face Austin? Austin: Pastor Nathan said it could go either way, stitches or not but then Reagan came home from work and made me go in. Me: this is why married men live longer. Austin: so you’ll name the dog Babushka? Me: well I have to meet the dog first. But I’ll tell you what. I’ll give 10 extra points toward Babushka. Austin: yes! Can Reagan have 10 extra points too? Reagan: hi Gretchen! Me: yes, I’ll give Reagan 10 extra points towards Babushka too.

I took a substantial break from social media over Easter week. I have been sick for a month - could do one major active thing a day or asthma flared even on a couple inhalers. Recovery is walking, lifting, diet, craving chocolate 24/7 (probably to fill the void of prednisone.)

@BethMooreLPM And we get to feel the exuberant joy that comes when we go to the tomb and he is not there, he has defeated all the things, he is alive and reigns victoriously. All hail King Jesus!!! He is our all in all!

And we stand with the adoring crowd chanting, blessed is he! Then again with the crowd chanting, crucify him! And we wait for the sound of a hammer hitting a nail. And feel the horror of the holiest act in all of human history. And we realize how truly alike we all really are.

Each year on this day I have the same thought. As different as we may be, as much as we disagree, for those of us to whom Christ is truly Lord, we begin the most pivotal week on our calendar. We hold in common this utterly uncommon, invincible, unchangeable truth: Jesus saves.

@dollyqwe1 Also sleep is important. I taught myself to relax every muscle starting from my feet upward at a very young age. No sleep Equals very hard days afterward. Also post it notes are friends. Write everything, and put all things that go out the door together.

@BethMooreLPM Beth I live in the Deep South, NC, it’s all the follow up we get, younger and older. And older women might be called “Ma”, as an endearment from the younger people, boys and girls. Endearments make me feel loved and cared for. My mom used “baby cakes” as mine and I loved it❤️

Was gonna ask you younger if you find it offputting for an older woman to follow up a thank you or you have a good day, too, with an endearment as in, “Thanks, Sweetheart.” “You, too, Darlin.” But then I thought if you said yes, I’d probably not be able to stop but I’d feel bad about it.

@BethMooreLPM Well said Beth. And it’s done so very often. The tongue is a very powerful part of the body, we would do well to keep right reigns on it. I just don’t understand why kindness is not offered more freely and more often.

After all these years on social media, one thing I never get used to is seeing various individuals I personally know depicted as this or that by people who do not know them from Adam. It may even be someone i wouldn’t align with ideologically or perhaps theologically but I know them and know they’re being characterized wrongly. It still blows my mind. I just want to ask over and over, does it matter to you that you are perpetuating deception? That you actually have no idea what you are talking about? Do you care anything at all about what is true? Or is all fair in your favorite war? Because that kind of thing is actually wrong. It’s sinful. I don’t think God takes it lightly.

@BethMooreLPM This is so well said. I am so glad you broke free of it all and remained loyal to Christ alone. I am grateful for your honesty. You have shown me how to be sure footed, loyal to one and one only, and bow to no one but Christ. I’m grateful for you!!!

I share this post in earnest and (what may prove a naive) hope that a few people caught in the situation I’m about to describe will hear instead of rushing to the usual tropes, criticisms and caricatures. For what it’s worth, I offer this in good faith. Between 2016 and 2022, I faced a test of the genuineness of my faith so large and consequential, I’m almost at a loss to think of the right adjectives to describe it. It might not have been so big to someone else but it involved so much of my Christian identity, it was all but existential. Well more than that. It was a dying. It is this test that helps me understand why people who seem deeply devoted to the Lord Jesus and hold the scriptures in highest esteem also hold to a system, institution or leader no matter what they do and defend a side or individual to a degree that is baffling. I can tell you why because I had to face every bit of it. Identity, community, camaraderie, what we’ve known and loved, what part of it we still love, the people we loved, the people we still love, reputation, what people will think, how you will be judged and condemned and thrown over to the other side who doesn’t want you either. And to whom you also do not align and would not belong. Friendships. How you will be misunderstood and misrepresented. How adrift and alone you will feel. How disliked. And then there’s this and it would be a mistake to minimize it: your JOB. Your source of income. Your vocation. This is the part of the crisis I most write these words to convey because I think they are most in play for many right now, whether in media, ministry or politics. Let me try to put this in the words that were constantly resonant in my spirit in those years. And to this day. Though you have no other place to go, Beth, and no place to fit and it not only MAY have financial repercussions but WILL have financial repercussions to the ministry and to your family and will also make them targets and none of it will ever look the same or be the same, will you choose what you believe to be right and put everything else in your vocational life at risk? This is what is at risk for many people whose professional reputations and positions are tied up with leaders, institutions and political parties. Mine was, too. The cost is enormous and the options are often untenable. And so there we are. Having to cast ourselves on the mercy of God. Not for a third way. But as THE ONLY WAY. The only truth. The only life. I’ve made multiple errors in judgment. Jumped too quickly to condemn. Spoken wrongly. Remained silent wrongly and confusingly. I never get it completely together. But what I will tell you is that I believe we are meant first and foremost to call out our own house, our own side, and our own identity group for its mind-boggling hypocrisy. These were my people. Evangelicals. Conservatives. Claim what you will but I know who I am: I am pro life from conception to casket. I am pro small government. I am pro godliness and the pursuit of a holy life. I am pro marriage and family and pro-those God calls to remain single and sanctified and I’m deeply thankful for them. I am pro traditional sexual ethics. I am pro love of God and love of neighbor and the dignity of every person as an image bearer of Christ. I am pro love all. I am pro church. I believe in the community of the saints. I am pro Bible study to the death and believe the aim of all discipleship is to know and love and follow and emulate Jesus Christ. I am pro gospel. Dear God in heaven, I am pro gospel. I believe there is one name by whom we must be saved. Jesus. What I am not is pro Trump. Wasn’t pro Clinton. Wasn’t pro Biden. But those were not the candidates many in the world that I loved so much were cheering on. I accept that Donald Trump is my president. I pray for him on a regular basis. I’m a law abiding citizen and pay my taxes. But I believe Trump fosters something in people that makes them lose their way.

Why is everyone trying to justify the murder of Renee Good? Whatever her life was like at home had nothing to do with her murder. ICE was not thinking, “oh she is mentally unstable we need to take her out”. No they just killed her in cold blood. No thoughts just the power.
