Personal news: I've just been laid off at @inversedotcom. BDG had layoffs last week that didn't affect Inverse so I thought the Gear team and I had escaped death once again, but in this extremely poorly managed digital media landscape, the writing has been on the wall for quite a while After getting bounced from @inputmag (after its closure) to Inverse in October 2022, the Gear/Tech section has been whiplashed through three editor-in-chiefs — so I am not at all surprised. 2023 was a complete shit show filled with just rollercoaster ups and downs every day; it was really hard to get great work done. I did a lot of great work this year (some of my best at Inverse/Input) and I intend to keep the strong momentum going. I'm not leaving tech media/journalism/content creation any time soon. If anything, this unfortunate news reaffirms that now is the time to invest in myself and go all-in on my work. I've been in tech journalism for almost 14 years professionally — and the way things have been in digital media, it's time I bet on myself and create a sustainable business that isn't built primarily around churning out reblogs and SEO-chasing junk. I want to thank everyone who I worked with on the Gear team. It's been a hell of a ride these past (almost) 5 years at Input/Inverse. I especially want to thank @jamestpero my second-in-command, who was also sadly laid off. HIRE HIM for editing or writing! You'll get a great colleague, a funny-as-fuck writer, and a hell of a friend. Everyone's support on social whenever I publish stories (I read all your comments) has been incredible, and I plan to return it all back 1000x with even more passion about technology and cool shit. In fact, I've been cooking up something this year, which I'll now be accelerating, and you'll hear more about that very soon! Motorola heard you like big cover screens (apparently), so it leaned even harder into the biggest thing setting its RAZR apart from the competition. Twenty years after the debut of the original RAZR (and nearly five years after its first flip phone revival) the 2024 models of the Razr and Razr+ feel like the products of a company that finally knows what a special thing it has on its hands. While I still pine for the bold chin-centric design of old, most everything else here looks like a winner (on paper, at least): 🔵 Refined hinge that's easy to open and smooth throughout the whole range of motion 🔵 Bigger cover screens on both models, with many more fun customization options (including an Always-On Display!) 🔵 Special camcorder mode that automatically activates when the phone is half-folded and turned on its side 🔵 Faster charging (wired and wireless) 🔵 First MediaTek processor option on a Razr (probably contributing to the lower price point of $699 vs the Snapdragon 8S Gen 3-powered Razr+ at $999) 🩷... and of course, they brought back the Hot Pink color for the 20-year anniversary. Of course, there are a few things I'm not sure about. 😬 Replacing the Razr+'s ultrawide camera with a measly 2x telephoto might make portrait stans happy, but not this guy 😬 Last year's Razrs are STILL awaiting Android 14, even as competitors like Oppo upgrade their own flips 😬 Last year's model also suffered from a problem with its screen protector cracking (which happened to my own review unit). The Razr'24 has a new film, which will hopefully hold up better. 😬 Motorola's camera output (particularly on video) has long left much to be desired. BIG TBD on this one. So much more to say about both of these phones - honestly, the above doesn't even scratch the surface. To its credit, Yahoo has a decent severance program. I'm going to take a breather and in the meantime, would happily recommend each of my teammates who also were laid off today. They are smart, funny, scrappy and hard-working. Hire them.

Some personal news: tomorrow is my last day at Engadget, and the last day for nine of my colleagues. My teammates have been the reason I've stayed with Engadget for 13 years. They are my friends, my family, and I will miss them dearly. It has been a marvelous run.
