When I'm teaching/writing about Midsummer Night's Dream, I try not to call Bottom et al 'the mechanicals', but rather 'the workers'. They're artisans, but they are also theatre workers. Not thesps. Not 'luvvies'. Workers. THEATRE WORK IS WORK. Real jobs are being lost right now.
