My posts that are critical of Poland have gotten above average engagement. My posts urging reconciliation and focus on the russian threat to both Ukraine and Poland barely do any numbers. No state has either the legal or the moral right to dictate another country's national pantheon, historical memory policy, state honors, monuments, street names, or the names of military units. International law simply does not give one country the authority to decide whom another nation may honor or commemorate. The United Kingdom has never made Ireland's participation in international organizations conditional on how it views Michael Collins. Israel honors Menachem Begin, and Britain has no authority to prohibit his monuments in Israel. Britain has never demanded that the United States remove monuments to George Washington, nor has it tried to prevent India from honoring Subhas Chandra Bose, whom Britain once regarded as a criminal while many Indians regard him as a national hero. Likewise, in the former Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito is remembered by some as a liberator and by others as a dictator. History is rarely viewed the same way on both sides of a border. That is precisely why national historical memory belongs to sovereign nations, not to their neighbors.
