Another big problem in America is irrational distrust of institutions. A problem for liberals is distrust of government.

So many people think national service is this “one easy trick to fix polarization” but if you look at the countries that actually have some form of it I’m not sure there much of a correlation between having national service and being a politically normal country.

@JHWeissmann I think with AI it is different than other Nimby things, people who don't want data centers built are pretty honest that they don't like AI industry and want to hurt it. Its not like stopping luxury homes where people wrongly think that will reduce prices.

@JHWeissmann Bad take. Data centers are the single biggest threat to a sustainable power system. They are keeping coal plants open and leading to a massive build out of fossil gas. They are reversing all of our progress on climate and there is no end in sight to their rapacious consumption.

One thing about an AI data center ban is that, in any world where you could pass it, you could also probably just pass legislation making it easier to build out new power on the grid instead.

The war in the Gulf is just such terrible timing for Ethiopia, who imports all of their fuel and practically all of their fertilizer. But this was an issue they’re addressing! They’ve got a refinery that’s supposed to be coming online next year to supply the domestic market with both fuel (from new extraction in the Somali region) and a plant working on urea fertilizer. If this war had started in late 2027 instead of now they’d be close to finished. But now, the economy could be utterly destroyed if the Houthis join the war.

I think the key thing holding back AI video generation is how hard it is to change a small thing. If an AI vomits up a massive app to do your business logic and you want to adjust an edge case, this is trivial. If Veo makes a feature-length heist film and stumbles into a plot hole at minute eight, half the project gets infected with garbage.
