A central idea is that everything should be privatised and run for profit - even law courts, armed forces and police - let the marketplace resolve all issues. And so the uk Tory gov began privatising en masse: British aerospace, Royal Mail, railways, the lot. It hit a brick wall of public opposition with NHS & fire, but has continued its privatisation project by stealth with relative ease via:
- early 90s, PFI initiatives brought private finance into the NHS.
- 2010s - Health and Social Care Act 2012 allowed competitive private tender for many NHS services, expanding the role of companies like Virgin Care within the NHS umbrella.
It’s taken them a while to find a less controversial vehicle for it, but now many NHS services are privately delivered using public funds.
As ur keen on a bit of fact checking, ul note that fact checkers like The King’s Fund & Full Fact confirm private companies deliver services under NHS contracts. But make no mistake - this has been the direction of travel for the British establishment for 50 years.
