Human history is full of unexpected twists. If the U.S. hadn't pushed Huawei into a corner five years ago, the company might never have poured resources into chip research. At the time, Huawei’s goal was simply to keep producing its own 5G phones. But that move turned into one of the most important steps for China to challenge — and even potentially overturn — the U.S. dominance in the AI industry. Looking back, even though the media at that time constantly hyped that 5G posed a threat to U.S. national security, that clearly wasn’t the case — AI was. From America’s perspective, keeping China lagging in AI is far more critical than keeping China lagging in the 5G. However, the United States played all the cards on 5G, leading China to be much better prepared for AI.
