Cognitive Load Theory isn’t just theory—it’s the backbone of effective teaching. When instruction overloads the learner, the learning doesn’t stick. Clear modelling, verbal rehearsal & sequencing matter. They protect the brain so learning lasts. What's your go-to strategy?

Delighted that the chapter on Formative Assessment that I wrote with my @ucl colleague Caterina Correia has now been published in the BERA-Sage Handbook of Research-Informed Education Practice and Policy: bit.ly/3G2ZQWG. Less delighted that the 2-volume set costs $410.

As a woman, educator, faculty member and advocate for equity in and through education, who is also about to start doctoral work in the Field of Equity, Diversity and Social Justice at Western University, the sentiment of this article is perplexing. Boaler seems to indicate that those of us who are striving to understand the science of how we learn and who aim to bring that understanding into evidence-based practices to maximize learning for all students are promoting misogynistic, right-wing, or anti-equity goals. This is not the case at all and perpetuates a false narrative. Scientific inquiry, standards and methods need to be followed so that we remain objective and unbiased. Being called out when you don’t, should be expected.

Thanks to @SenSHenderson for visiting Good Shepherd Primary School in Canberra to view high impact teaching practice in action. As shadow education minister she thanked our leaders and teachers for their leadership and commitment to the high quality, evidence based teaching.

Still reflecting on a so many key messages from #TeachingMattersHobart National Science of Learning Summit. A room full of inspiring leaders sharing their expertise and passion for education. @Rossefox from @ceacg explaining that the most important learner is the teacher and we should be proud of achieving efficient and effective teaching. @PamelaSnow2 discussing the importance of teaching a child to read provides a powerful mental health protective factor. @JOSully016 from @ShapingmindsAus detailing that effective practice is context and subject proof. @JennyDonovan2 from @EdResearchAU explaining that some teaching practices do result in learning but not all of them do so consistently, efficiently or effectively. @DrLSHammond sharing our job as teachers is to interrupt the forgetting process. @BrookeWardana discussing when students receive high-quality instruction at the sentence level, it's amazing what they can achieve. @JessicaColleu from @ceacg detailing we need more fences at the top of the cliff and less ambulances at the bottom, particularly for our older students. @jseamer30 sharing the importance of connection and surrounding yourself with others in this space and start small for long term success. @PepsMccrea streaming in to explain how motivation influences behaviour, learning and wellbeing and we must actively and systematically create opportunity to build it. @MichaelDRobert6 and Toni from @GlearnCo explaining there is no point powering through content, if students don’t remember what was taught - Daily Review is critical and teachers need to make the time. @ollie_lovell @glenn_fahey @NathanielRSwain @Smithre5 shared many thoughtful and inspiring comments on the panels they were on also, so good! We look forward to #TeachingMattersHobart2024 - Save the date coming soon @JenWhiteEd 🙌🏼

Future teachers often think memorization is the best way to teach math and science – until they learn a load of untrue, ideologically-inspired nonsense at College theconversation.com/future-teacher… via @ConversationUS

The @FountasPinnell#Phonics Lessons” do not align with the SOR. Neither do the TC Phonics Units of Study. Just saying “phonics” doesn’t make it phonics. This is education malpractice. It cannot and should not be permitted to continue. Time to Burn the Boat! ⛵️
