Great paper from @PepsMccrea @Josh_CPD & @Barker_J. Key phrase: Embrace Cognitive Similarity “While every student brings unique experiences, strengths, and needs to the classroom, understanding the fundamental similarities in how we all learn provides a powerful foundation for inclusive teaching. This principle recognizes that the core mental processes involved in learning—how we pay attention, process information, and build understanding—are remarkably consistent across individuals. In short, how we learn is more similar than it is different (Willingham, 2012). Focusing on these shared mechanisms doesn't ignore individual differences; rather, it allows us to design core instruction that is effective for the widest possible range of students from the start.” resources.steplab.co/content/files/…

This is a really good blog from @mradamkohlbeck following on from our #bookmarkMonday post yesterday, which featured @adamboxer1 blog on Instructional Coaching. (All the Adams!) Adam K, provides some excellent considerations and practical tips on how to mitigate against the challenges of implementing effective IC. Personally, I really liked this simple statement which, ultimately, is the goal of every school leader: Instructional coaching is one teacher working with another to get a bit better at teaching continuously (definition from Josh Goodrich)We all agree with that! Also, what a joy to be able to join in with a professional conversation on a really important subject. ☺️ @SCottinghatt @HughesHaili @Josh_CPD @MrChrisPassey

Last week @adamboxer1 posted a great blog on the challenges of instructional coaching implementation. So… this week, here is my offering on how to overcome the challenges that Adam flagged. Getting IC right is hard but fruitful for school improvement edupulse.co/post/answering…

Just before Christmas, after 4 years, I finished my next book, Improving Teaching. It synthesises what I've learned in almost 15 years leading and studying professional development. To end 2025, and as a heartfelt thank you, I'll share the acknowledgements...

@adamboxer1 @AJPettway1 I agree: "Waiting on" is weak language, but TBH the way that Denarius uses it is obviously fine since that classroom is SICK.

@AJPettway1 @Josh_CPD "RADICAL" there's actually a bit to think about there. I dont personally love the "waiting on x" thing in general because its slow and shows low expectations, but he's put a serious edge to it which makes it good

@RajEcon @BradleyKBusch @adamboxer1 I think my other issue is that AI can only 'listen to' the script. It can't watch the video. So the data is radically limited. It can't see student work, can't look at students, can't look at the teacher etc., I really struggle to see how it can help in any real way.

No No No No No No No No with a cherry on top? I strongly doubt AI is anywhere close to being able to do this effectively, let alone the message it sends about "how much we care about training new teachers"

AI could be used to analyse recordings of lessons delivered by new teachers, to give feedback on what they are doing well and what could improve, as part of a National Institute of Teaching project schoolsweek.co.uk/ai-could-analy…

The reason I say that is we are starting to see similar studies on both lesson planning and feedback, where in isolation look good. But scratch deeper don’t capture the range and/or long term consequences. Tell you what, I’ll bet you an InnerDrive mug vs a Steplab mug that within 12 months of this tweet there will be a study that shows AI coaching is a) better than a control group, b) outperforms human coaching and c) only looks at a narrow set of outcomes.

@BradleyKBusch @adamboxer1 I would - I think - be surprised if that paper did come out. Lots of the research points out the culture / connection elements of IC being the thing that does the thing, if you know what I mean.

Agreed. I suspect it wouldn’t lead to anything good, as it will miss the key thing humans crave the most (connection with others). But if I’m being super cynical I can see a world where a) a research paper uses only one measure which shows AI coaching outperforms humans on that one aspect and b) a company (probably without an education background) offers it super cheap highlighting how it can be done at scale with shiny tech language and lots of marketing to make it sound appealing and innovative.
