We are enjoying Shanghai immensely. It’s a very cool, safe, clean city, and I had a memorable interaction yesterday: While waiting for lunch, I noticed a young man going from group to group. He was demoing a stain remover, drawing ink on his own sleeve and wiping it clean while people waited for a table. Most people waved him off, we did too. After lunch, I saw him again and felt pulled to encourage him. I told him I didn’t need anything, just wanted to give him $20 to support his grind. He refused, smiling and vigorously shaking his head. He said he would only accept if I took the product. He didn’t want a handout, he wanted to earn it. Not sure if it’s cultural or just this young man, but it was powerful to see someone choose dignity over a handout.
