The Montreal shooting is a brutal reminder: incel ideology isn’t some fringe internet joke anymore, it’s a recognized terrorism threat in Canada. The movement’s hateful creed has driven over 50 attacks across the US and Canada , including the 2018 Toronto van attack that killed 11 and injured 15 , and the 2020 Toronto massage parlour stabbing, the first time Canada charged an incel-motivated attack as actual terrorism . What makes it dangerous is also what makes it hard to fight. Incels aren’t an organized group with a centralized structure, they’re a loose, decentralized online community united by ideology, not leadership . No HQ to raid, no membership list, just radicalization happening one forum post at a time. Not everyone agrees on the “terrorism” label, to be fair. Some researchers warn that an anti-terrorism response to misogyny risks giving national security agencies more power than they should have , and others argue the violent threat from incels gets overstated relative to the much larger number who never act on the ideology . But after yesterday in Côte-des-Neiges, it’s hard to argue this is just an online joke anymore.

🏏 This morning, The King welcomed the Afghan national women’s cricket team to Clarence House. The team was set up during the Afghan Republic in 2010, but lost recognition as a national team following the Taliban’s return to power. In Afghanistan, women and girls are banned from playing sport, along with other restrictions on their education, work and public life. His Majesty was able to hear the stories of many of the players who fled Afghanistan and have rebuilt their lives as refugees, playing club cricket informally, and campaigning for recognition.
