The first occasion I identified openly, anywhere, as a ‘Christian peacemaker' - in truth, an utterly risible signifier as far as most are concerned - the context related to citizen input concerning martial law. My book, "Fires In The Night: The Earth Liberation Front, The FBI, and a Secret History of Eco-Sabotage," is published today! And I have SO many people to thank. Foremost among them is my brilliant and impossibly hard-working editor, @alorentzen, who midwifed this into existence with soft, dextrous hands. Everyone @VikingBooks has been amazing. I'm blessed to have Alexis Nowicki @flyschola1 as my publicist, who has reached out to basically every community radio station in the PNW asking if they wanted to do an interview. This book began life as an article in the New York Times Magazine where @willystaley kept it alive through a pandemic and a constantly shifting political climate. Most of all, I'm grateful to the ELF defendants who trusted me with such a sensitive story, one that a lot of journalists had gotten wrong. I'm honored that they chose to defy all good sense and speak with me.

@MatthewMWolfe Conspiring to burn federal buildings and assassinate federal law enforcement for the purpose of intimidation and advancement of an ideology is obviously terrorism. Participants admitted to the scope and extent of the plan. They planned more than shooting one cop, but failed.

While reporting my book on the Earth Liberation Front (out tomorrow!) I managed to gain access to 30,000+ pages of secret, sealed discovery documents detailing the FBI’s investigation of the group. This included fascinating records of federal law enforcement's years-long infiltration of environmental activists in Eugene and Portland, Oregon, using confidential informants, phone records, and other forms of surveillance. Some highlights below:

@MatthewMWolfe Interesting times, Eugene, those days. There were a couple of occasions I was literally the only one sitting at a community dining table who hadn't been served a federal grand jury subpoena. Jacob and the Eugene cluster I knew, but my crew were headed in a different direction.

@sethharpesq Oddly, a Fort Benning connection. Many of those Eugene arson-era activists were known to Food Not Lawns, disparaging our “soft” alternative to confrontational direct action. They went to jail; we went on to define a visionary edgeline of the global, regenerative design movement.
