unpopular opinion: immigrants are expected to be endlessly grateful, polite, careful, well-behaved, in a way locals are simply never required to be in their own country. a local having a bad day, snapping at someone, being rude in line, gets written off as just having a bad day. an immigrant doing the exact same thing risks it becoming a referendum on whether people like them should be allowed to stay, as if basic human moodiness is a privilege reserved for people with the right passport
