This 1924 recording shows the flexibility of a 16th-century Greenwich armor associated with the royal workshops of Henry VIII. The Greenwich workshops were established in 1515 to produce armor for the king and his court, and this piece is considered the earliest dated armor from those workshops. It is also the earliest surviving Greenwich garniture: a full armor system made with exchange and reinforcing pieces so it could be adapted for different uses. This was not stiff costume metal. It was engineered for movement, protection, ceremony, battle, and tournament. The surviving pieces include a reinforcing breastplate with a lance rest, a left-hand gauntlet reinforce for mounted tournament use, and a locking gauntlet for mounted combat with swords. One of its most unusual features is the ventral plate, worn beneath the breastplate to reduce the weight carried by the shoulders. Only one other known Greenwich armor has this feature, made for Henry VIII in 1540. The armor is believed to have been made for Henry VIII and presented to François de La Tour d’Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne, who led a French diplomatic mission to London in 1527. Its etched and gilded decoration places it among the richest surviving Greenwich armors. European armor was not primitive or clumsy. At its highest level, it united engineering, artistry, status, and physical function into one object. Beauty and utility were made to serve each other.

They later built awe-inspiring brick castles (like the massive Malbork Fortress) and founded thriving towns across Prussia, creating a prosperous, well-organized Christian state that advanced trade, architecture, and settlement in medieval Eastern Europe. Their legacy of discipline and construction endures! 🏰⚔️

King Richard the Lionheart earned his legendary nickname through his extraordinary courage and skill as a Christian military leader during the Third Crusade (1189–1192). He played a pivotal role in capturing Acre and achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Arsuf against Saladin’s forces, showcasing the chivalric ideals of bravery and knightly prowess that made him a hero in medieval lore.
