Premier @ABDanielleSmith did not clearly answer the "Golden Cat" question in the Legislature.
@FreeAlbertaRob, the Chief of Staff, has now clarified:
– There was a cat sculpture
– It was a diplomatic gift from Saudi Arabia
– It is not gold, but a bronze/copper piece worth a few hundred dollars
– It belongs to the people of Alberta
Good.
Questions:
1. Why wasn’t this clearly stated in the Legislature? This would have ended the issue.
2. Was there only one cat, or more than one? Is this a replica?
3. Where is it recorded and publicly disclosed?
4. What is the protocol for declaring and cataloguing diplomatic gifts in Alberta?
@FreeAlbertaRob, given recent controversies (Tylenol procurement, hockey tickets, vendor relationships, recovery community contracts, etc...), do you really not understand why public trust is low and questions persist?
When we were in opposition (2010–2015), did we not hold government to account for far less?

To all those Nenshi followers who buy your tinfoil in bulk, here are the facts around your latest conspiracy theory about the now infamous cat sculpture. 1. The cat sculpture is worth a few hundred dollars and is made of copper - not gold. 2. It was gifted to the People of Alberta by the Energy Minister of Saudi Arabia who was attending the World Petroleum Conference in Calgary in 2023. 3. It was not a personal gift to the Premier and is being displayed at the McDougall Centre Premier’s Office out of respect for a country we are developing an important and growing trading relationship with. 4. As Nenshi doesn’t understand, because he never has nor will he ever be Premier, the exchange of gifts with foreign dignitaries is a regular part of international diplomacy as a gesture of friendship, economic partnership and peaceful relations. Nenshi’s disrespect for foreign trading partners is yet more proof of his complete unfitness to lead…and I want to express my unwavering support for his continued leadership of the Alberta NDP.
