This September, Northwestern Polytechnic will open a new state-of-the-art skilled trades training centre, a major win for students, industry, and Grande Prairie. This 40,000 sq. ft. expansion will add more than 700 new skilled-trades seats across 12 programs, with expanded training in carpentry, plumbing, heavy-duty mechanics, pipefitting, welding, and automotive service, all right here at home. This is a huge win for Grande Prairie and the entire North! Our industries are growing, and this ensures we are training for the needs to keep building. This is how you grow an economy: get people trained, get them working, and get projects built. This investment is the result of strong leadership. President Dr. Vanessa Sheane, Board Chair Shawna Miller, and the Northwestern Polytechnic team have worked closely with industry, MLA Ron Wiebe, and our government to align training with real workforce needs. I’m grateful to the Ponoka residents who refused to stay silent and the SCAN team for their tireless work in closing this property. This action restores the peace of mind families deserve and serves as a firm warning: if you threaten the safety of our communities with illegal activity, we will shut you down. We are restoring safety to this neighborhood and sending a clear message: criminal activity that jeopardizes public safety has no place in Alberta.

Today in the legislature, I introduced Bill 18:  The Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act.   This legislation is about strengthening safeguards and ensuring vulnerable Albertans are protected when they need care most. It is crucial that MAiD remains a last resort, not a first response.   We need a system that prioritizes dignity, support, and real options. Bill 18 is about making sure Albertans have real options and are met with compassion and protection, not steered toward a choice that should only ever be made in the most exceptional circumstances.   Hope should be easier to access than death.

We discussed how our government is advancing women’s economic participation and taking action to address gender-based violence in every corner of our province. Ensuring rural women have the opportunities, supports and safety they need to thrive in their communities remains a priority for our government.

Our government has just introduced the 'Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act' to make it clear MAID cannot be provided where mental illness is the sole underlying condition. Our goal is to strengthen protections for vulnerable Albertans and ensure MAID is not used when other care and treatment options are available. Through a made-in-the-Peace-Country solution, Northern Lakes College will begin delivering programming at the Fairview Campus starting September 2026 — ensuring students can continue learning close to home. This means stability for learners, continued access to post-secondary education in northern Alberta, and stronger pathways into high-demand fields like skilled trades and health care. We’re working closely with partners to support current students through this transition with minimal disruption, while the community takes a leading role in shaping the campus’s long-term future. We talked about Alberta’s strong economy and the major investments Budget 2026 is making in rural roads, water, schools and health care. I was pleased to provide an update that that Northern Lakes College will become the new learning provider at the Fairview Campus, securing its future for students in the Peace Country. Rural Municipalities of Alberta helps drive this province forward, and I am always grateful for the straight talk and practical leadership RMA members bring to the table.
