NEW: Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the highest-ranking Catholic authority in the Holy Land, has delivered one of his strongest firsthand accounts yet of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank following his latest visit to the region. Describing Gaza, Pizzaballa said bluntly: "Gaza is a disaster." According to him, entire cities have been erased. "Rafah no longer exists," he said, describing a landscape where neighborhoods have been completely flattened and people now survive among tents, rubble and open sewage. He said one of the aspects that photographs and television footage cannot truly convey is the smell. Another reality he described was the widespread presence of rats, saying they are biting children and that Gaza is now full of children who, instead of going to school, spend their days playing beside sewage because schools remain closed. Despite the ceasefire, he said daily life has barely improved. While some food is now entering Gaza, many essential materials remain prohibited because they are classified as "dual-use." According to Pizzaballa, this includes items as basic as school desks, notebooks, pencils and even glass for windows, making reconstruction and the reopening of schools almost impossible. He also warned of an increasingly severe mental health crisis, saying doctors and humanitarian workers are urgently calling for psychologists and trauma specialists to care for children and mothers affected by months of war. Speaking about the West Bank, Pizzaballa described what he called a climate of growing lawlessness for Palestinians. He said unauthorized checkpoints, attacks by Israeli settlers, destruction of farmland, uprooted olive trees, thefts, intimidation and assaults have become part of everyday life in some areas. One of his most striking allegations concerned the response of Israeli security forces. According to Pizzaballa, Church representatives frequently contact the Israeli military when settlers attack Palestinian communities. However, he said that by the time soldiers arrive, the settlers have already left, "as if someone had warned them beforehand," after which, he claimed, the Israeli military often ends up confronting or questioning the Palestinians and Church representatives instead. Pizzaballa has lived in the Holy Land for decades and is considered one of the Vatican's most authoritative voices on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
