Today the independent Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Board increased the cash rate by 25 basis points. This will be difficult news for millions of Australians with a mortgage and we understand the pressure that this will put on families and businesses. While today’s decision was widely expected, that doesn’t make it any easier. We know many Australians are doing it tough which is why we continue to roll out responsible cost of living relief, including a further tax cut later this year and another one next year. At the same time we’re doing what we can to strengthen the budget and address our longstanding productivity challenge.

Returning home and seeing the devastation fires have had on communities so close to ours is truly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with all those who’ve lost their homes and businesses in Harcourt and across other parts of Victoria.

Right now, there are still active fires burning in parts of Victoria with an Emergency Warning still in place around Tallangatta Valley. Fire Danger Ratings remain high for the Mallee, Wimmera, North Central and North East districts and for the South West. While our emergency services work to contain these fires, we're rolling out more support for Victorians impacted by these bushfires. It'll help communities like Natimuk, with payments for Victorians who've lost their homes in the fires. This will mean eligible uninsured households can receive payments of up to $52,250 to help rebuild. And for our farmers, more mental health and wellbeing support will be provided to help them deal with the loss of crops and livestock. These fires have caused unimaginable loss for so many across Victoria. We'll continue wrapping our arms around them and providing the support they need.

Today I’ve been on the ground with locals in Natimuk who were hit hard by bushfires on Friday. We’ll stand with them as they begin the long road to recovery.

I want to thank firies right across the state - who have worked around the clock to protect lives, homes and communities. Today, there are 12 major fires still burning across Victoria. Some will burn for days. Some for weeks. But there are no Emergency Warnings in place. And while crews continue their work managing these fires, the task ahead will focus on recovery. It's why we've just announced $15 million to start the clean-up. Because burnt debris and damaged structures are dangerous. They put families at risk. And they make it harder to come home. Another $10 million will go towards removing hazardous waste and damaged buildings for eligible uninsured and underinsured households. And $5 million will waive waste levies and landfill fees - so clean-up is free where it's needed. This is a long road back. But we will stay on it - with our firefighters, with our communities, for as long as it takes.
