@AyersGretchen Finally, we allowed them to discuss the meaning and unity of their piece. It was necessary for them to recognize that meaning is in the eye of the beholder and, in comparison, the meaning of their paper will be up to the interpretation of the reader.

For this reason, it is necessary that the unity of the piece be clear and the meaning be relevant and purposeful to represent the overall topic (just as with their papers). They will not be there to tell us they way they want their paper to be interpreted, so they must be clear.

@AyersGretchen We distinguished between the two parts of a writer--the creator and the critic. We allowed them to draft multiple drafts of a classroom logo (the creator in the prewriting/prescultping phase). Then we tasked them with creating a first draft of the final product.
