@adrianpandev It's probably so that the IRS could form an estimate of how many people might look at voluntary renunciation of US citizenship. In March, after years of campaigning, the punitive 'exit fee' of $2.350 was cut to $450.

The IRS is weighing a box on the 1040 asking if you are not a US citizen or hold dual citizenship.
But this box will not change what anyone owes. US citizens already report worldwide income no matter where they live, and non-citizens owe based on where they reside and where their income comes from. The box doesn't change a single tax bill.
It's even stranger to ask who is a dual citizen because as long as you are a US citizen (irrespective of other citizenships) you are taxed the same as all other US citizens. There is no special tax treatment for dual citizens.
Naturalized citizens disclosed their other citizenship when they applied to become US citizens. Those born abroad to a US parent documented theirs through a CRBA with the State Department. The government already has all of this on file.
So all this new rule does is put an asterisk on millions of tax returns for further review by the government.
I work with many internationals who live and build here and file a 1040 every year. Most would not like being put in a special "ready for further review" box and may start looking to other countries for their businesses and investments.
I'm struggling to see the benefits to this policy.

Prospect is that this temporary stalemate becomes permanent (cf Gaza). Iranian military capability v damaged. But their control of the Strait and power to attack Gulf states would remain. Proposed deal w’d be a godsend for the global economy but a strategic defeat for the US.

I discussed the prospects with @adamboultonTABB on @TimesRadio at 1045. If the deal is on lines below, what has Trump’s war achieved? He gets a reopening of the Strait, but under tight Iranian control (not the free passage which existed before his war). That one Iranian win./

Best account of deal so far from Amwaj including implications for Lebanon. In essence sanctions relief for a regime that is more hard line than at war’s start. In return for reopening a previously open waterway. Brill. Not quite yet nailed down. 1 Precise amount of assets to be unfrozen and conditionality. 2 Iran’s plan for tolls & Persian Gulf Strait Authority - to be negotiated with Oman - appears now relegated to a back burner. 3 Trump can claim he has an Iranian commitment over 60 days to negotiate on nuclear stockpile but he had that in Geneva in February. Overall a true American Debacle. One can only hope lessons are learned and the war mongers banished. Both Andy Burnham and now Wes Streeting have called for the UK to rejoin the EU Burnham at conference last year: “I want to rejoin the EU.” Streeting today says the same It could be a controversial policy in the Makerfield by-election. It voted 65% Leave in 2016
