BREAKING: The White House is inviting Elon Musk and Tim Cook to join President Trump on his trip to China this week. Executives from Boeing, Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, BlackRock, Citigroup and Meta have also been invited. Trump hopes to unlock a "series of business deals" with China.

I’m really not a jingoistic anti-China guy, but there is something grating about China boosters describing America as a “pedophile country” with “pedophile elites” when the PRC *objectively* has laxer laws against pedophilia and fewer legal protections for underage victims.

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America The Newman Centers at Midwestern secular colleges may be more religious than some of these examples. Point is, there is a streak of Catholic religiosity in secular colleges that by far dwarfs the numbers in the great books schools.

@PureLandNation @Empty_America If you go to Boston College, Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence College, st John’s, there isn’t religious extremism from my experience. Maybe there are a few fringe kids, but these are just normal schools and many non-Catholics are at them.

One thing that we already see in Anglo-American Catholicism (for better or worse) is the centrality of the UNIVERSITY in Catholic life. Young Catholics meet their spouses at Catholic colleges or the Campus Parish. Going away to college is socially load-bearing.
VB Knives@Empty_America

Related to this, consider that we don't even know what the mature form of Anglo-American Catholicism is in a cultural sense. As WASP "mainline" protestants come back into union with the Catholic Church, they don't suddenly become cultural Italians, nor should they.

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America Boston may be a different scene. All of New England is obviously very progressive. My collegiate and professional experience in the Midwest and Midatlantic saw many pockets of Catholic religious extremism even in secular settings like college campuses. And that does include

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America That represents a tiny fraction of Catholic education. What kind of experience do you have that you are regularly coming into contact with "these people"? The only Northern European Catholics (both cradle and convert) I know are thrifty normies, just because most

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America Most of these families don't insist on a great books cult. They just want their kids to have some conscious allegiance to Catholicism. Fraternization and dating through the Newman Center at the affordable local public university is perfectly fine for that.

@Empty_America A lot of these families have large numbers of kids and are active participants in the “cult of the humanities”, meaning, they like the idea of a cannon based education focused on literature off the Columbia University great books model.

@White_Janissary @wokshovel I'm not bothered by the age gaps that would be legal in large parts of Europe and Asia. I also don't know the specifics of the case but how old were the youngest kids involved?

@wokshovel I agree to an extent, but Epstein’s 2008 conviction for sexual solicitation of a minor (almost certainly) wouldn’t be considered a crime under Chinese law. The fact that Epstein was a registered sex offender is because of how strict American law is compared to others.

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America It's a lot of people compared to any other metric on earth other than the most prime neighborhoods of the 1st tier US cities. The areas that are about 60-90 minutes drive outside a major metro are some of the richest places on earth. This is by design-- the government lavishly

You have to be SUPER rich to be the richest person in a random county in rural New Mexico. Reality is odd.

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America Still, a surprising number of rich people like to spend a lot of time in rural areas. Having multiple homes in multiple cities solves the issue you're thinking about and still allows each random town to get its superrich.
