I’m really not a jingoistic anti-China guy, but there is something grating about China boosters describing America as a “pedophile country” with “pedophile elites” when the PRC *objectively* has laxer laws against pedophilia and fewer legal protections for underage victims.

@wokshovel I agree to an extent, but Epstein’s 2008 conviction for sexual solicitation of a minor (almost certainly) wouldn’t be considered a crime under Chinese law. The fact that Epstein was a registered sex offender is because of how strict American law is compared to others.

@DanteJeffe14617 @Empty_America Still, a surprising number of rich people like to spend a lot of time in rural areas. Having multiple homes in multiple cities solves the issue you're thinking about and still allows each random town to get its superrich.

My parents had a 20+ year age gap. But it was dad's 3rd marriage.

I can pay for it.” He has since been detained, but has yet to be charged as the case was referred to federal investigators. He must be held accountable. Anyone who would assault and harm an endangered animal like Lani is a danger to the entire planet and belongs behind bars. And for all those wondering, Lani is ok! A marine biologist went to check on her and she is going to make a full recovery.

Travelling around these tidy little towns in wealthy rural Zhejiang, it becomes much easier to intuitively grasp why GDP per capita is such a lousy proxy for well-being or quality of life, even before getting into the concrete numbers (and this isn't just a China thing btw).

Part of the fascination with modern Asia is that they prove the 20th century didn’t really ever have to end.
You could have had statist industrial regimes, cultural conservatism, nationalism, and abundant YIMBYISM continue on nigh forever with committed leadership that didn’t fundamentally hate their own populations.
That the West stumbled on an unbeatable modern formula for statehood and then completely threw it away for God knows what will be endlessly speculated on by Asian historians for ages to come.
