Today, joined by more than 50 fellow Commissioners, I sent a letter calling on the @councilofdc to reject the #InitiativeAmendmentAct as an attack on democracy… in a town that enjoys too little democracy as it is. Write to your councilmember today. 🗣️ bit.ly/ANC-IAA-letter

I oppose the bill to limit DC ballot initiatives. You can make up a cost for nearly any initiative — and exaggerated costs are used to block change all the time. DC residents already have a limited voice on the federal level. We need to protect our local democratic rights.

This Friday, a @councilofdc committee will consider the Initiative Amendment Act, which would severely constrain citizens' ability to propose ballot initiatives. This is an anti-democratic and cynical bill. The Council should not take away direct #democracy. How to oppose it: 1/3

These two will STILL have the power - they just can't even fathom allowing us to use an extra tool to pressure them. So glad @AllVotesCountDC is building off of the (not novel) legacy of the late Liz Davis (@WTUTeacher) and making clear that the people can legally pass laws too.

Very interesting bill here from Phil Mendelson and Anita Bonds: It bars the elections board from approving any ballot initiative that could be passed "subject to appropriations." That's in response to the structure of I83, on RCV/open primaries: lims.dccouncil.gov/Legislation/B2…

If you want to read the legal reasoning behind this precedent, which cites the work of Liz Davis and "Campaign for Treatment", check out the thoughtful analysis, courtesy of the office of @DCAttorneyGen: dcboe.org/getattachment/…

@tylermcscifi @RankTheVoteOhio oy. it seems like you disagree, which is fine. But it's a bit exhausting to demand a "logic proof" and not engaging w/ a reasonable theory that multiple people have shared. I think you can do the dot connecting too! if you don't think women are dismissed more than men, gahbless.

@RankTheVoteDC @RankTheVoteOhio If so, you still have a lot of dot-connecting to do for me: 1. Doesn't FPTP technically have a stronger incentive for coalition building? 2. How are points (1) and (2) not inherently at odds with each other? 3. What does this have to do with giving women an advantage?

I have a serious question for RCV advocates: I frequently see arguments along the lines of "RCV helps elect more women", to promote RCV. But I don't understand how that would work. Could one of you please explain, logically, why the process of RCV would elects more women?

@tylermcscifi @RankTheVoteOhio the theory is that RCV changes the culture of politics by incentivizing coalition building and allowing a new discourse to emerge where people are not dismissed outright.

@RankTheVoteDC @RankTheVoteOhio Which I believe is a spurious correlation. Do you have even a theory of a causal relationship to connect the dots between the mechanics of RCV to the election of more women? Or is it simply that progressive districts are both more likely to vote for women and implement RCV?

@RankTheVoteOhio Honestly that sounds like an assertion of a cultural problem, not an electoral one. And if the issue is one of vote splitting (which I don't believe RCV fixes, but I'll roll with it) there's no reason to expect that affects women differently than men.
