I had the pleasure of running into the DC Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc today!   In keeping with the proud KAΨ tradition of civic engagement, the Chapter was out in full force advocating for the needs of DC seniors and all our communities.   "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor."

DC faces serious financial challenges and a housing affordability crisis. We will not allow anyone to exploit resources meant to benefit our communities. Now, the misused $1.2 million will support affordable housing and economic opportunity on H Street — as originally intended.

The Court found Brewer improperly diverted nonprofit funds and violated his legal duty. It ordered Brewer to pay HSCDC back the full $1,225,000 in unauthorized bonuses he got. And it created a constructive trust over Brewer's current assets so HSCDC can collect what it is owed.

NEW: We won a $1.2 million judgment against an H Street affordable housing nonprofit director. Kenneth Brewer diverted $1.2 million of nonprofit funds to himself through improper bonuses. We are clawing back the money so it can serve its original purpose: supporting H Street.

No one should have to worry if their home is safe.   This $400k settlement is a step toward justice for W4 residents who were put at risk by negligent construction. Developers who cut corners must be held accountable.   Grateful to AG Schwalb for fighting to put residents first.

NEW: A developer will pay $400,000 to fix unsafe construction at a Ward 4 condo building. The construction was so faulty it left the building swaying in the wind — endangering residents and damaging their homes. After years of advocacy, residents will get badly needed repairs.

District of Columbia Department of Buildings
Thanks to this enforcement partnership, DC residents are being kept safe: “As the District recognizes Building Safety Month, this case is a clear example of why complying with the District’s building code regulations is critical to ensuring the public’s safety and welfare,” said DC Department of Buildings Director Brian J. Hanlon. “This case also spotlights how collaboration—between DOB and the condo unit purchasers who raised the problems, and with our enforcement partners like the Office of the Attorney General—is successfully working to hold accountable those who tried to skirt our laws.”

These DC residents' dream of owning a home turned into a nightmare. Shoddy construction left their building swaying in the wind and put their families at risk. Our settlement delivers long-awaited relief with funds to add structural reinforcements and make other needed repairs.

After successfully defending DOB's order at the DC Court of Appeals, we secured this settlement. Developer Steven Sushner will pay $400,000 to repair the building's structural issues. And proceeds from 4022 Georgia Avenue LLC's ongoing bankruptcy will also fund these repairs.
