@even_steven8tht Your return doesn’t mean anything. Might be smaller but your tax bill was less. I ended up owing $8,400 this year versus ~$5,000 last year. Sounds bad but my total tax bill was about $10,000 less in ‘25. Roughly the same income. 25.2% net effective 2024 20.4% in 2025

The reality is that they averaged the tax returns of everyday people like us with the millionaires who got the massive tax cuts, skewing the average dramatically. Out of all my years filing taxes this was my small return by far.

His withholding was just different this year so each paycheck was a bit larger, and he didn’t realize it. Notice how he didn’t call out his total tax bill for both years.
