My dear here is the statement Stephen Colbert made
I hope playing copyrighted Peanuts music won’t "cost CBS any money."He set up the gag by mentioning that the rights-holders of the Peanuts music were aggressively suing unauthorized users, and then immediately had his house band play the famous theme.
And then they played the Peanuts theme song
So either Colbert knew that CBS had the rights to play the Peanuts music theme
AND HE LIED
Or for some reason, he knew the show was being taped before a live audience before being aired
Knowing that CBS would review the tape before airing it and edit that part out
Or hoping that CBS would not catch it it would air and Sony would see Stephen Colbert, and CBS for copyright infringement
And by the way, you don’t think CBS would sue Stephen Colbert for saying on the air. I’m going to play this copyrighted material that I don’t have permission to do so.
And cobra told the joke during his monologue as the end
