An asylum seeker who 'raped five goats and a lamb' has told court: 'I'm a normal person'. Massoud S, a 19-year-old asylum seeker, has been handed a 30-month prison sentence for the horrific abuse of animals at an educational farm near Marseille. Between February and April, he targeted five goats and a six-month-old lamb at Le Refuge d'un Moment. Staff first grew suspicious when they noticed rope marks on the animals' legs, traces of blood, and genital injuries. Sanctuary owner Cassandra Sortino set up CCTV, which captured a man's silhouette multiple times. This led to a police operation that caught the Afghanistan-born teenager in the act. Despite being caught with his trousers down, wearing latex gloves, and DNA evidence linking him to the abuse, he continued to deny the charges. At his trial at Aix-en-Provence courthouse, he told the court: "I'm a normal person." He claimed he had missed his train back to his asylum centre in Marseille and stayed at the sanctuary because he had nowhere else to go. During a psychiatric evaluation, he reportedly told a doctor: "They're making a huge fuss about it when they're just animals." Massoud S claimed his mental health was severely affected after losing his family to bombing in Afghanistan before arriving in France in November 2025. Alongside his 30-month sentence, he has been banned from France and placed on the sexual and violent offenders register. Sanctuary owner Cassandra Sortino is still struggling to come to terms with the ordeal. "We can't explain it morally," she said. "We feel like we've failed."
