@The_Ogundipe I think the main essence of being conferred with the rank of a SAN is to recognize the contributions to the legal profession particularly by members who are not on the bench. I understand this position seems lopsided if you consider those legal professionals in other fields

@Spectmo It shouldn't be, brother. Advocates author briefs and other court papers that shape classroom learning, too. Some of them teach through the advocacy. It won't make sense to make the professorship an additional privilege for them because they've taken silks.

Except for lawyers who combine practice with academics, I strongly believe that the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on those strictly in academia should be discontinued. The essence of the SAN rank can be likened to what the position of a professor represents within the academic sphere. Each is a mark of distinction within its respective domain. A lawyer who is not an advocate should not ordinarily be eligible to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, except those who can demonstrate clear, practical contributions to advocacy or the development of courtroom law. A similar or equivalent distinction should, however, be established for corporate lawyers who have excelled in corporate practice. While it need not be the SAN rank, for the reasons stated above, it should be a comparable honour that reflects their contributions. The work of many such lawyers transcends national boundaries and has had significant impact, bringing immense pride to the legal profession and Nigeria’s legal sector. They, too, deserve special recognition and privileges akin to those accorded to Senior Advocates. Again, lawyers who are strictly in academia should not be conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, particularly when the work of advocates does not qualify the advocates for appointment as professors of law. The attempt to make incursions into the professorial rank is why some SANs now brandish professorships they did not earn.
