Yesterday in Kashgar, while listening to a local guide who grew up in the Old City explain its history, my friend Xiangyu and I started talking about how The Kite Runner was filmed there.
We discussed how the movie couldn't be shot in Afghanistan because of the security issues, so they chose Kashgar as a stand-in for Kabul. They knew perfectly well that Kabul had become unsafe, but Kashgar was safe — and it still preserved its authentic cultural character, which is exactly why there were scenes worth filming. They destroyed Kabul and wrecked its culture, then Hollywood came to Xinjiang to shoot a movie that serves their narrative of the war in Afghanistan, with the clear intention of cultural appropriation.
They understand everything all too well. Otherwise, their Hollywood wouldn't have been busy capturing the unique cultural features of Kashgar while shamelessly spreading lies and rumors with a straight face. That's exactly what it means when they say: you can never wake someone who is only pretending to be asleep.

I spent three weeks in Xinjiang in 2001, travelling all over the region. It is one of the, if not the most brutal, openly visible repression I've seen. And the situation has only gotten much worse since. You have to be spectacularly blind (or worse) not to see it.
