I would argue that one thing missing from Japan, or certainly most discourse within the country, is the sense described here -- of how many things the country has gotten right, whether through luck or otherwise. Comparisons to overseas tend to overemphasize things Japan "lacks"

I have been in Tokyo for one week now. This is my fifth time, but the first just “existing” – no sightseeing, etc, just living locally. There are so many things the Japanese get right (and so few they get wrong) that being here is a delight. I hope they know how lucky they are!
