Poverty wages. Low staffing. No benefits. They are not “saving money”. They are squeezing workers and calling it a business plan.

@BattlementLK How many daughters of Marx committed suicide? What racist epithet did Marx call his son-in-law? Why did Marx's mother cut him off financially? Why couldn't Marx manage his household finances? Why didn't Marx ever pay his housekeeper? Why did Marx impregnate his housekeeper?

Powerful essay! What if capitalism isn't suffering 'decline'/'stagnation', but is working as designed: "Accumulation of wealth at one pole is...at the same time accumulation of misery, agony of toil slavery, ignorance, brutality, mental degradation, at the opposite pole."
Steve Maher@SteveMaher18

I'm really pleased with our essay in the new volume of the Socialist Register. In it, we challenge arguments that Trump emerged from capitalism's decline into "techno-feudalism", "political capitalism", or an "asset economy" driven by central banks inflating asset prices.

Ro Khannan is a Yale lawyer lacking a PhD in economics — Khannan is not qualified to claim credentials as a Stanford economics professor because he never was a professor of economics. Khannan was a “Visiting Lecturer” which means he was a nobody with no standing in economics.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

I co-introduced historic legislation to increase the minimum wage to $25. As someone who taught economics at Stanford, here is why it makes sense. The real minimum wage was $14 in 1968. Today it is half, but productivity has increased 2.5x. Instead of extractive capitalism, we need a free enterprise system that pays workers what they are worth.

@EdbieLigerSmith The Red Terror (1918–1921): An estimated 28 bishops and over 1,200 priests were executed. The Great Purge (1937–1938): In 1937 alone, more than 85,000 Orthodox priests were shot. By 1939, it is estimated that only a few hundred of the original 50,000+ churches remained active.

“Lenin and Stalin are evil because they killed people.” Ya… so did George Washington and Abe Lincoln. That’s WHY they’re considered national heroes. Because they were political leaders at a time when social contradictions came to a head & their countries were beset with war. Social change is not an easy process. It involves armed struggle against the dominant class forces or invading colonial powers. This is why using “death counts” to measure the success of a given political figure is so stupid. You have to ask who they waged war against, and for what purpose? In the case of Lenin & Stalin it was the dictatorial Russian ruling class & the invading Nazi fascists. And it was because they defeated these forces that they were able to transform Russia from a backwards & impoverished empire, into an industrial powerhouse that constructed the world’s first workers state. An omelette is never made without breaking a few eggs. And in every class society there are a lot of bad eggs that deserve to be cracked. Long live the legacy of the Bolsheviks and the USSR!

@RTSG_Main The lunacy of Marx: Marxists contend that the subsistence farmer avoids exploitation by retaining 100% of his meager output. Meanwhile, the factory worker is exploited by definition, despite having a higher level of consumption, because he is paid a wage, not his surplus value.

Right wingers never actually directly address Marx himself. Instead, they rely on imaginary straw-man’s that Marx doesn’t believe or himself refutes.

.@repdeliaramirez and @Analilia_Mejia are right to call for raising the federal minimum to $25 and banning the tipped wage—maintaining $7.25/$2.13 as floors lets businesses get away with legally keeping people in poverty. Hopefully, the bill builds in increases to keep up with the cost of living. Allow for periodic assessment to make sure it is still a meaningful floor that provides for an increase in the standard of living for the lowest earners. The good news: most voters support both of these policies. Given that, there's no GOOD reason why Congress can't get it done. #majorityagenda cepr.net/publications/t…

BREAKING: Two Democratic Reps. are introducing a bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $25/hr and eliminate subminimum wages. Reps. Delia Ramirez and Analilia Mejia are introducing the bill, saying it's unacceptable that the minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009.

@xriskology A good life is not characterized by high infant and maternal mortality. It is not one where starvation is always lurking. And let's not forget these were extremely violent times, in which in some groups, up to 25% of people died from homicide.

Dr. Émile P. Torres (they/them)
What we now consider "normal"--working constantly, sleeping little, prioritizing work over sleep, friendship, relationships, love, leisure, hobbies, art, reading, etc.--is VERY ABNORMAL, anthropologically speaking. In most ways, life today sucks compared to what we had.

Part of the mythology of capitalism is that people worked themselves to the bone before the Industrial Revolution. Just false. If you go back far enough, before the Neolithic Revolution, people hardly "worked." Everything they needed to live a Good Life was readily available.

If our cultural values and ways of life are what got us here, rooted in narrow-boundary, cold, and logical thinking – then perhaps moments of turbulence like these actually call on us to change our way of thinking entirely.

@NJHagens Between 1841 and 1901, life expectancy for males and females increased by 20 and 24%. The literacy rate jumped from 55% to 97% for women. The quality of life index for children and youths doubled, while real wages for unskilled workers increased by over 100%.
