Delegitimizing your own country’s revolutionary leaders, struggles, and outcomes due to perceived morale imperfections is what the Chinese Communists call “national historical nihilism.” And they view it as a huge mistake for any Communist Party. You can’t apply modern morale standards to leaders of the past. You should appreciate their progressive elements & struggle to overcome the reactionary elements that they left behind. Most of the modern American left is historically nihilistic because they were taught by university professors to view history through a morale lens. On the other hand, Communist leaders like Ho Chi Minh appealed directly to the American Revolution & the founding documents of the US, which inspired him greatly when he read them while traveling through France.

Not adding anything new to the conversation here brother. Yes, the genocide of the natives was a morale tragedy. Everybody knows this. But how does this change the fact that the revolution against the British was historically progressive? Do we act as if the French Revolution wasn’t progressive because they maintained colonialism& slavery in the colonies? Of course not, because it was still a historical step forward. Condemning revolutionary figures of the past because they were morally imperfect is what the Chinese have dubbed “national historical nihilism” and they view it as a huge mistake for any Communist Party.

Bourgeois revolutions were historically progressive at the time they happened because they wiped away the vestiges of feudalism, monarchy, and colonialism in some cases. This is why Lenin himself praised the American Revolution: “The history of modern, civilised America opened with one of those great, really liberating, really revolutionary wars of which there have been so few…” This is very very very basic Marxism. Why are we always being attacked by so called “Marxists” for taking standard Marxist positions?

Paine is the goat. I still think Common Sense is the best critique of feudalism & monarchy ever written. Really cuts to the core of the irrationality of such systems. Makes me proud that it was written by an American. I almost think it HAD to come from an American because we were less influenced by fuedal modes of production than any country in Europe, so Americans had an easier time pointing out the inherent contradictions & irrationalities of monarchic forms of Government. Especially when combatting the Brits which made criticizing monarchy politically important. And Paine was ABSOLUTELY a proto-socialist as you say. I imagine he would have become a Marxist had he lived another century or so. His main concern was always the laboring classes.

I’m hard on ACP, but Liger is correct here. Furthermore, in the bourgeois revolutions of the 17th- and 18th centuries you find proto-socialist elements, like the Diggers in the English revolution, Thomas Paine in the American revolution, and Babeuf in the French revolution.

We also uphold Lincoln and the Union because they moved history FURTHER forward by abolishing the slave based mode of production.
