I’m not sure that’s accurate. Baltimore archbishops are rarely made into cardinals. It doesn’t happen more than it happens. Only three Archbishops of Baltimore have ever been elevated to the College of Cardinals (Gibbons, 1877-1921, Shehan, 1961-1974, and Keeler, 1989-2007). Cardinal O’Brien was elevated only after he was named Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher.

@USBishopsData Archbishop Lori succeeded a line of Cardinals. Curios why he isn’t on the list?

Several of these men could be expected to be elevated to the College of Cardinals. Archbishop Hicks of New York, Archbishop Henning of Boston, and Archbishop Vasquez all succeeded cardinal archbishops. Cardinal Cupich's successor in Chicago could be seen as a shoe-in for the sacred college.

The Holy See recently announced Pope Leo XIV's calendar of liturgical celebrations for April through July. Included is Holy Mass with the blessing and imposition of the Pallia upon the new Metropolitan Archbishops on June 29, 2026 at St. Peter Basilica in Rome. Last year, there were eight metropolitan archbishops from the United States who received pallia (McElroy of Washington, Grob of Milwaukee, Casey of Cincinnati, McGovern of Omaha, McKnight of Kansas City in Kansas, Henning of Boston, Vasquez of Gelveston-Houston, and Weisenburger of Detroit). This year, so far, there are four metropolitan archbishops expected to make pilgrimage to the Eternal City: Archbishop James R. Golka of Denver Archbishop Mark S. Rivituso of Mobile Archbishop James F. Checchio of New Orleans Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks of New York Additionally, there are several metropolitan archbishops who have reached 75 years of age or who will do so before June 29 and may retire before then: Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore (turning 75 on May 6, 2026) Archbishop George L. Thomas of Las Vegas Blase Cardinal Cupich of Chicago Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami Archbishop John C. Wester of Santa Fe

@JosephVu495590 @WalkingHymnal I don't think there are enough dioceses in the northeast for Brooklyn to be elevated, and those provinces were just spun a few years ago with Las Vegas. Sorry to rain on the speculative parade, guys. 😂

@JosephVu495590 @USBishopsData Exactly. Per why I expect under Leo that he will reconfigure the US Cardinal Sees in a proper way, not "Tobin would've been a Cardinal wether he stayed in Indianapolis or went to Newark". Same with McElroy. I don't see Newark officially being a Cardinal See after Tobin's gone.

Galveston-Houston was elevated to an archdiocese in 2004 and given Daniel DiNardo as a coadjutor bishop after doubling its Catholic population doubled in 20 years. Three years later, Cardinal DiNardo was elevated to the sacred college. Portland's Catholic population is lower than it was a decade ago. Omaha's Catholic population is the same as it was in 2013. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Holy Father elevate new (arch)dioceses, but it won't be Portland in Oregon or Omaha.

@USBishopsData @WalkingHymnal Pope Benedict made Galveston Houston a Cardinal see. The US has massive demographic changes that other countries don’t have.

@WalkingHymnal @antoine_rask It appears as if His Holiness favors collaboration and the collegial aspect of the college (go figure). That's why I don't expect him to wait. I think he would want the active Archbishop of New York to as quickly as possible have a seat in the room, so to speak.

@antoine_rask @USBishopsData True. Though he may wait or may not. The good news at least is that Ghirlanda is out of favor when it comes to Conclave medeling

I'd agree but FWIW Cardinal Dolan was elevated to the college before Cardinal Egan turned 80. There's no precedent in Galveston-Houston, and very little precedent in the USA regarding the college since the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis elevated four American bishops to the sacred college: McElroy, Cupich, Tobin, and Gregory. None of them had predecessors of voting age in the college when they were elevated.

@USBishopsData If tradition & custom is followed, Hicks & Vasquez will wait a while until their predecessors turn 80. Henning's predecessor is already there, so I expect him to be first.

@VeronicaAmbuul Noted! Thank you. I thought that the office may continue if the Vicar General himself is elected or appointed as administrator, but that is not the case.

Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will be beatified on September 25, 2026. Venerable Sheen was born in 1895 in El Paso, Illinois. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria on September 20, 1919. In 1951, Pope Pius XII appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. He received episcopal consecration on June 11, 1951 at the Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Rome from Adeodato Cardinal Piazza, O.C.D., Secretary of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation (what is now today the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops). In 1966, Saint Paul VI appointed Sheen as Bishop of Rochester. He retired in 1969 and was given the personal title of archbishop. He died on December 9, 1979 in New York, New York.

Congratulations to Archbishop Tomothy Broglio who celebrated his silver jubilee of episcopal ordination yesterday! Archbishop Broglio was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1951 and ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cleveland in 1977 in Rome. In 2001, Saint John Paul II appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. He received episcopal consecration from Saint John Paul II at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome on March 19, 2001. The principal co-consecrators were Angelo Cardinal Sodano, then-Secretary of State, and Giovanni Batista Cardinal Re, who was then the Sostituto of the Secretariat of State, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Broglio as Archbishop of the Archdiocese for Military Services (U.S.A.) in 2007. He was solemnly installed on January 25, 2008 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He served as President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2022-2025.
Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA@MilArchUSA

On this day in 2001, Archbishop Broglio was ordained to the Episcopacy by Saint Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Basilica. We give thanks and praise to Almighty God for calling him to the holy priesthood and for choosing him for the Office of Bishop twenty five years ago.
