UEFA are masters at packaging. They place an incredible value on their products. The Conference League was only introduced a few years ago and smaller European clubs totally fancy it now. Chelsea, a big club won it and said they completed football. That's what UEFA wants. That competition was introduced to give smaller teams a sense of belonging. Tomorrow, they could host another and call it “UEFA Winners Cup” or something of the sort. They’ll say like its name implies, it's a tournament that accommodates every European club because they're winners. Smaller European clubs and a few others with a big budget will chase that because the physical size of the trophy is big and it gives them a place in the Conference League. The European Clubs Association has a massive membership. It's over 800 of them and they all want a sense of belonging. That tag of a European trophy sells the product so well, especially to fans, yet also, from a consumer’s perspective, the quality is just significantly lower. Games are in our faces. Clubs go into the season knowing they can make Europe by being 8th on the table. That means some millions more in matchday revenue. It's all commercial.
