There is no ambiguity about your position on apartheid. You seem resentful that some Black South Africans chose to take up arms against an unjust system. The film Invictus did not create Nelson Mandela’s legacy—his legacy was shaped by those who suffered under apartheid and truly understand his impact. You are entitled to admire your own heroes, even if they were responsible for the oppression and killing of Black people.

Nelson Mandela is framed by the powers that be as a political prisoner unjustly locked up because he supported human rights…or something. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather, Mandela was a convicted terrorist. He was the man who, at his own initiative, turned the African National Congress (ANC) into a terror organization and started a campaign of violence against white South African civilians. Meanwhile, his wife burned the ANC’s enemies alive. To some of you, this is old news; those aware of Africa’s problems have long known Mandela was a bad actor. Africa is not a single country. It’s also unclear what you mean by blaming colonialism. Its effects are ongoing and undeniable. Just look at land ownership in South Africa—deeply unequal and rooted in colonial history. Even today, people’s economic prospects are still largely shaped by the racial hierarchies established during that era.
