For those asking how they seemed foreign and what FAANG means now: No matter how much you climb the corporate ladder at Meta now from L5 to L6 to director or even VP, you'll never have even one-tenth the impact of a junior PM at Facebook in 2012 in terms of creating novel products and businesses. Ironically, the group was in the ads team, hyper-tuning the last 1% of core products that had shipped a decade earlier by people largely long gone (such as me). In FAANG, you are frolicking on forgetfulness' farm: a small cog in a machine, an extra in someone else's Netflix series (and one already in its late, bad seasons). But they were happy with it! One of them had been there 11(!) years even. This presented no existential crisis; on the contrary, it was the coziness of corporate stability, "work-life balance" and comp that kept you in expensive SF housing and brunches at Tartine. “We have discovered happiness”—say the last men, and blink thereby. I'll never understand it (the longest I've ever been at a job was at my last startup @spindl_xyz, all of three years). What a world that produces such people, and such comfortable perches. With all that's coming in AI, hardware, and crypto, I doubt these cozy nests will last much longer....but the disruptors of today will one day grow to a new acronymic tier (Polymarket-OpenAI-Anthropic-SpaceX->POAS?), and there'll again be the need for the faceless and loyal L6, the iron spine of the tech incumbent.
